Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with Tareq M. A.
M. Albanai and Alexander Marschik, co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Reform of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly, on Saturday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said as the first founding member to have signed the UN Charter and a permanent member of the UNSC, China has always firmly supported the cause of the UN, and upheld the UN-centered international system, the international order based on international law and the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
Amid the volatile and intertwined international situation, Wang urged all sides to hold high the banner of genuine multilateralism and encourage the UN to play a key role in maintaining world peace and development.
Wang said that, in the reform of the Security Council, efforts should be made to uphold fairness and justice, increase the representation and voice of developing countries, give more small and medium-sized countries the opportunity to participate in decision-making, and correct historical injustices against Africa in particular.
It is hoped that the co-chairs will guide all parties to remove disturbances and build consensus so that the reform process of the Security Council will be widely recognized by the international community and the results will stand the test of history, Wang added.
Albanai and Marschik, who are permanent representatives to the UN of Kuwait and Austria, respectively, expressed appreciation for China in strengthening the role of the UN and upholding multilateralism and the authority of the UN, adding that they are ready to enhance communication and consultation with China and other member states regarding the reform of the Security Council.
