China's Shao Yaqi won the women's sabre individual gold, while Cheung Ka-long of Hong Kong, China claimed the men's foil individual gold at the Chengdu Universiade on Friday.
Shao defeated teammate Fu Ying in the quarterfinal 15-11, then overcame Sarah Camille Noutcha of France in semifinals. The latter shared the bronze medals with her teammate Malina Marie Vongsavady.
In the final, Shao defeated South Korea's Choi Ji-young 15-10, winning the first gold in fencing for China.
"Believing in myself was the key to my victory," said Shao.
"During the bout, I kept finding the best pace and I made it. No matter what, my desire for victory helped me keep fighting. I also need to thank the audience, they helped me a lot," Shao added.
In men's individual foil event, Cheung defeated Pierre Loisel of France 15-12 to win the gold. Cheung's teammate Choi Chun Yin Ryan and Jan Maksymilian Jurkiewicz of Poland shared the bronze medals.
