Guangdong, Shenzhen extend winning streaks

The Guangdong Southern Tigers and the Shenzhen Aviators pushed their winning streaks to 11 and nine games respectively in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league

on Friday.

In Guangdong's 102-84 victory over the Beijing Ducks, Marshon Brooks shot 16 of 21 from the field, including nine of 13 three-point attempts, to contribute a game-high 41 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Zhao Rui added 15.

Brooks had 10 points in half a quarter and Guangdong raced into a 17-9 lead. With their second unit, Beijing got back into contention through Zeng Fanbo's two 3-pointers, and pulled within 20-18 as the first quarter expired.

Brooks added another two shots from beyond the arc entering the second, pouring in 16 points down the stretch to help Guangdong set up a 12-point cushion at the interval.

Brooks continued his scoring output in the second half, and Guangdong led by as many as 29 points with two minutes remaining.

Beijing's six-game winning streak was brought to a halt. Jonathan Gibson top-scored with 15 points in his second game back to Beijing. Fang Shuo and Zeng had 14 and 12 points respectively.

Guangdong center Justin Hamilton, who had previously spent five seasons in Beijing, was held to six points in 15 minutes of action.

Jared Sullinger recorded a double-double of 22 points and 16 rebounds as Shenzhen got past the Shandong Heroes 97-87.

He Xining scored seven of Shenzhen's nine points to open the game, as Shenzhen broke open a 7-7 tie with nine points in a row and led 34-20 after the first quarter.

Shenzhen led 52-41 at halftime, and extended their advantage to 21 points midway through the third quarter before holding off Shandong's comeback.

Three other Shenzhen players hit double figures in scoring. Shen Zijie had 19 points and 10 boards. Bai Haotian and He scored 18 and 15 points respectively.

Shandong power forward Troy Gillenwater led all scorers with 32 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

Also on Friday, three players put up over 20 points to power the Guangzhou Loong Lions past the Zhejiang Lions 134-99, and the Shanghai Sharks clinched their 11th victory in the last 12 games after edging past the Qingdao Eagles 96-91.

Antonio Blakeney notched 41 points as the Jiangsu Dragons handed the Ningbo Rockets their 20th straight loss with an 89-74 result, while Christopher Clemons scored a mighty 55 points as the Xinjiang Flying Tigers got past the Shanxi Loongs 127-110.
