'Culture City of East Asia' event kicks off

The opening ceremony of "Culture City of East Asia 2023 Shizuoka," an event to deepen exchanges between Japan, China and South Korea through art and culture, was held Tuesday in Shizuoka

in central Japan.

The Culture City of East Asia program is an art and culture event launched by China, Japan and South Korea. Each year, the three nations will name one or two cities from each country as the Culture Cities of East Asia to promote cultural exchanges and cooperation.

Chengdu and Meizhou in China, Shizuoka in Japan, and Jeonju in South Korea have been designated by the three countries as the Culture Cities of East Asia 2023.

The selection of the Culture Cities of East Asia by the three countries has not only promoted communication and exchanges of East Asia as a whole, but also actively spread oriental culture and Asian culture to the world by holding unique cultural and artistic activities, Shunichi Tokura, commissioner for the Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs said in a speech via video.

Governor of Shizuoka Prefecture Heita Kawakatsu said that Japan, China and South Korea all have splendid cultural traditions, expressing hopes that the annual event can make good use of each other's cultural resources and contribute to world peace while showcasing the fine East Asian culture to the world.

The Chengdu Municipal Bureau of Culture, Broadcast-TV and Tourism said in a video message that it hopes the cities of China, Japan and South Korea can deepen exchanges, find cultural common ground, promote non-governmental cooperation and make positive contributions to the further development of cultural diversity.

More than 600 guests attended the opening ceremony. An exhibition of Chinese, Japanese and South Korean cultures will also run from Wednesday to Thursday in Shizuoka.
